No dig diary, 28th June 2026
I had other things to do today, so work in the garden was largely limited to a bit of weeding around the brassicas. That involved removing a few volunteer potatoes which turned out to be an acceptable harvest for one … Continue reading
No dig diary, 21st June 2026
The most important thing to do today was to dig up the first of this year’s crop of potatoes to have with dinner. I went to one of the plants at the end of the bed, pulled all the haulms … Continue reading
No dig diary, 18th May 2026
I had to do the job in several goes even though it was only seven wheelbarrows of compost, but I eventually managed to get the potatoes earthed (composted) up today. I also scraped back what the blackbirds had managed to … Continue reading
No dig diary, 10th May 2026
Today’s harvest from the plot. The asparagus is pretty much expected, but the potatoes came from the sacks that I planted up in the greenhouse back in January. In the process of harvesting them I de-homed quite a few ants … Continue reading
No dig diary, 4th April 2026
As I’ve mentioned before, I kept many of the potatoes from last year’s harvest that had been uncovered by blackbirds and gone green. Today I collected them from the sack in the shed where they’ve been tucked away since last … Continue reading
Late Winter potatoes
Back in January I took some of the green Charlotte potatoes that I saved from last year’s harvest and put them into bags of compost in the greenhouse. By mid-February they were starting to sprout. And by the tail end … Continue reading
No dig diary, 24th January 2026 (part 2)
Given the success of my late new potatoes last year, I’m going to try for some very early ones this year. I’ve saved all the inedible green potatoes from last year’s harvest and today, in the torrential rain, filled six … Continue reading
I’ll get the wheelbarrow
Or perhaps even a forklift might be required for this second early (Charlotte) potato 😀
I think these might be a bit past eating
Not much chance of recovering the potatoes with the shoots intact either. One for the compost heap… I suspect they may need to be kept somewhere colder.
“Early” Christmas new potatoes
I posted recently about my attempts to grow new potatoes for Christmas. Well, sadly, due to my inattention, that didn’t quite go to plan. I failed to move the plants into the greenhouse before the first frost, which killed the … Continue reading
