Swimming goggles, revisited

Holidays over the summer mean I could do with a pair of goggles more suited to swimming outdoors in the sun than the clear ones that I prefer to wear in my usual pool. I’m fairly happy with the Finis Bolt goggles I recently bought, but I decided that rather than going for the same model with a mirror finish I’d try a pair of their Lightning goggles (again, with the mirrored finish) to see if I prefer the fit. I have no particular criticism of the Bolts. They aren’t insecure, don’t let water in and I can wear them for ninety minutes swimming quite happily. The fit just doesn’t quite inspire confidence so I’d like to try something else.

Because I always prefer to have a spare pair of goggles in the event of a strap or nosepiece breaking or the goggles starting to leak I’m also going to try the Nike Remora (again in a mirrored finish) which are of quite a similar design to the Finis goggles.

Swimming, 12th June 2017

Plenty of time today, so I swam 2,500m front crawl and then switched to kick and pull for 500m, working on bilateral breathing.

I’ve come to the conclusion that doing kick with a float and using a pull with my right arm to initiate breathing to my right isn’t really very satisfactory any more because the float obstructs the proper rotation of my body. On the plus side it does allow me the time to actually take a decent breath and I think it’s been helpful to get me other the psychological hurdle of not being able to get my head to rotate to the right at all.

When I switched to using a pull-buoy my stroke became rather messy, crossing the centre-line and all sorts of other problems. I think the first thing to do will be to establish a rhythm for taking the breath. I shall try again tomorrow.

Swimming, 9th June 2017

Work prevented me from leaving on time for what is a short session on Fridays anyhow, so it was another front crawl only swim today. I reached 2,000m and decided that another four lengths might be pushing my luck a little given the time left, so stopped there. I can’t deny that I was tiring quite noticeably at the end. I’ve pushed myself fairly hard this week.

Swimming, 8th June 2017

I just planned to do a front crawl and kick swim today. There was definite tiredness in my arms and back from the 8,500m I’d already done this week, but once I’d got going it really wasn’t too bad and taking the time available right down to the wire (the swim school in the next session were installing the lane dividers as I swam my last length) I managed to complete 3km.

Aqua Sphere Maddox Jammers, first impressions

I bought a pair of these last week in a sale for the ridiculously cheap price of £7.99, as much out of curiosity as anything else — I needed some new pairs of jammers and I’d already bought a couple of Jaked pairs at a discount so I thought I’d try these to see how they were.

I swam in them for the first time today and to be honest there’s really not a huge amount to say. They do the job. Compared with the Jaked ones and my cheap Arena ones the fit seemed very snug with little give in the fabric. Possibly that’s because (as I didn’t immediately realise) they’re fully lined. I also found them tighter than was initially comfortable around the bottom of the leg, though that possibly wouldn’t be an issue for someone a little less “shapely of leg” than myself. (Oh, on which subject I should write a piece about the annual “trying on of the new shorts” ceremony that I had to go through this evening.) Anyhow, once I got swimming the tightness really wasn’t a problem, but when I peeled them off after my swim there were slight compression marks on my skin where the bottom seams had been.

For £7.99 they’re ok. If I’d paid full price (£28.99 is the RRP I believe) then I’d probably not be too impressed. The Jaked jammers were less than £15 (reduced from a similar RRP) and I think I prefer them, but I’ll give that more consideration next time I swim in them.

Swimming, 7th June 2017

There was a temptation today to have another go at swimming 3km, but after swimming a few lengths to warm up I could still feel the tiredness in my arms from the previous two days and I just knew it wasn’t going to happen. No big deal really though as I’d come prepared to repeat my last Swimfit session:

20 lengths front crawl
1 minute rest
6 x 1 length front crawl, 20 seconds rest
6 minutes front crawl, alternating slow/fast lengths
rest until breathing returns to normal
same number of lengths as previous set, but faster, 15 seconds rest after each length
3 minutes breaststroke, alternating slow/fast lengths
1 minute rest
6 lengths easy front crawl

After the recovery/sprint lengths I was fairly exhausted. I think it may have been easier to try for the 3km 🙂 I made the distance up to 2,500m with fairly easy front crawl and some front crawl kick practising breathing to the right, taking me right to the very last seconds of the session.

Total distance for the month: 8,500m
Total distance for this year: 203,500m
Distance compared to annual target: 22,500m under

Finis Bolt goggles, first impressions

I swam 3km front crawl with these today for the first time.

The goggles came fitted with a “medium” nosepiece and three spare nosepieces were included in small, medium and large sizes. I wasn’t sure about the medium so tried
the small one but the goggles pinched the bridge of my nose with that one in so I swapped back to the medium.

The goggles were easy to adjust to size before I got into the water and whilst they didn’t have much suction to my face they didn’t leak at all during the swim. The adjustment didn’t slip either, unlike the Speedo Aquapure goggles that I’ve worn for the last six months or so which have slipped so often that the numbers on the adjustment scale printed onto the straps have worn off.

The view through the lenses was very clear and bright though felt somewhat restricted. The actual flat area of the lens feels smaller than the Aquapure. In fact they’re pretty much the same size. The Aquapure may be a couple of millimetres wider, but that’s it. Including the clear curved area of the lens the Bolt is much larger and transmits images from the pool nearby but not in a way that makes a discernible image. I found that a little distracting at first. The lenses didn’t mist up at all.

The most noticeable thing about the goggles compared with most of my previous pairs however is that the silicone gasket is much more shallow. This meant the goggles felt far less forgiving and much harder once on. I thought that might make them uncomfortable to wear for long, but actually I didn’t take them off at all for the entire swim, though I did re-seat them on my face a couple of times to try to make them more comfortable.

I’m not completely sold on them yet. I’ll keep another pair of Aquapure goggles on poolside just in case I decide I can’t live with them, but I’ll certainly keep trying them. Sadly they don’t appear to be available with dark or mirrored lenses for swimming outdoors in the sun. I could do with such a pair for holidays.

Swimming, 6th June 2017

In complete contrast to yesterday there were no more than four people in the pool during the entire time I swam today. I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do and I was still feeling a little tired from the effects of yesterday, but somehow I felt driven to try it again. So I just got my head down and cracked on. I have to admit it was tough. My arms weren’t always entirely keen. I tried to work on technique as much as possible, keeping in my head something I’d read yesterday about swimming front crawl being like pulling yourself along a rope, arm over arm. It’s an analogy that resonates for me. Not particularly in terms of the lower arms, but certainly in terms of positioning of the upper arms in order that the load is transferred to the back and the chest during the pull.

I took it right down to the wire to finish the 3km. The life guards were removing the lane ropes around me as I finished my last length 🙂 The last 500m was a bit of a killer and I felt exhausted when I got out, but in fact I’d done the distance about ten minutes faster than I did yesterday so I really shouldn’t have any complaints. Particularly as I also reached 200km for the year so far as well.

I might do something a little easier tomorrow though.

Apple iHal 9000

I’ve just seen the piece about the launch of the HomePod on the BBC News site. Searching the net it appears that I’m not the only person who was immediately struck by the similarity to our favourite psychopathic artificial brain.

If you visited someone’s house and they had one, you’d surely have to be tempted to say “HomePod, play ‘Daisy, Daisy'”. Wouldn’t you?

Swimming, 5th June 2017

First time swimming for ten days, which I do feel quite guilty about, not to mention a little frustrated because I’ll have lost a lot of the ground I made up last month on my target distance. I have been very busy with other things though, and in fact over the half term holiday week the public swimming times don’t really work out very well for me.

I also had to test drive my new Jaked jammers that I bought for a fair bit less than I paid for my last pair of cheap Arena ones.

So, straight into the pool and 3,000m of front crawl to start the month. It was pretty busy too, with plenty of people swimming lengths, including one chap doing very slow “old lady breaststroke” diagonally across three lanes of the pool.

And the jammers were fine. I did buy two pairs because they were so cheap. Perhaps I should have had more…
