In a “cloud sandwich”
I left the workshop whilst working on my Stevenson screen and looked across the valley to the east through the sycamore trees. Something wasn’t quite right, but it took me a little while to work out what. It was the … Continue reading
1-wire weather sensors on Linux
Some time ago I had a 1-wire weather station and a number of other 1-wire weather-related sensors run from a Linux server. It wasn’t hugely reliable because the cable run was really a bit too long, but with a bit … Continue reading
April, err, showers?
I’ve just taken this photo from our doorway, barely five minutes ago. I know that sleet was forecast, but this is hardly sleet. Winter seems to be slipping around the year until it starts in mid-January these days 🙁
A reminder of six months ago
I just found these photos sitting around. Given how hot this summer was and then how wet it’s been over the last week or so, it’s hardly believable that back in mid-March this was how my home looked.
Broadband: Beyond Thunderstorm
My ISP very kindly makes traffic graphs available for my ADSL line, which is mostly carried overhead on telegraph poles, over the tops of the hills to the exchange about 3km away (as the phone line flies). On the last … Continue reading

Well, perhaps. If you’re wet, cold and suffer from violent wind. Last week I managed to get quite a noticeable farmer’s tan. Today I’d be more likely to die of exposure. I can’t believe it’s barely two weeks to Midsummer’s … Continue reading
I haven’t the foggiest what’s going on with the weather
As I dropped down from the hills into the local town on the way back from swimming today, through the hedges I could see a strange-looking bank of cloud sitting in one of the valleys between me and the Quantock … Continue reading
Upside down rainbow
No, not an Australian one 🙂 I’m aware these can happen due to (I think) ice crystals floating in the sky, but it’s the first time I’ve seen one.
Splitting Eggs
Though it’s much warmer today we’ve had four or five days on the trot where the temperatures have barely risen above freezing, getting down to close to -10C on one occasion. One of the unexpected results of this sudden cold … Continue reading
