Quite tired still after yesterday’s session, so I took it easy today, just working on front crawl technique. Covered 2,300m mostly at a relatively slow pace, with a few 50s towards the end.

Total distance for the month: 35,400m
Total distance for this year: 450,600m
Distance compared to annual target: 40,600m ahead

Swimming, 23rd October 2017

Tri fitness session again today. Lots of sprints with active recovery. Almost needed the winch to get out of the pool at the end of the session 😀

4 lengths swim
12 lengths alternating kick and pull

4 x 1 length sprint, 30 seconds rest
4 lengths easy, 20 seconds rest
3 x 1 length sprint, 30 seconds rest
4 lengths easy, 20 seconds rest
2 x 1 length sprint, 30 seconds rest
4 lengths easy, 20 seconds rest
1 length sprint, 30 seconds rest
2 lengths easy, 20 seconds rest
repeat once

6 lengths swim down. Couldn’t quite manage the entire set and had to miss just a few lengths off the tail end, but I still covered most of it. I did have to do the kick on my back in the warm up and carry the pull-buoy to the deep end to use on the way back. Most people seem to just use it as a float for the kick, but for me it’s actually worse than having no float as it doesn’t offer enough support.

Total distance for the month: 33,100m
Total distance for this year: 448,300m
Distance compared to annual target: 40,300m ahead

In the home straight for the next oacapture release

It’s taken somewhat longer than planned for various reasons, but I’m finally in the final stages of putting together the next release (v1.2.0) of oacapture. I think I’ve killed off about eighty issues on github since the last release (though sadly there are almost twice that number still left for future releases).

Hopefully I can get it all sorted before the end of the weekend, but if I can’t it should be all done during the next week.

Better late than never…

Thanks to a chance conversation this evening between my daughter and one of her friends, specifically relating to girls with boy’s names, I was reminded of a radio programme my parents used to listen to when I was in my early teens that featured a couple who were amateur detectives. The wife was always referred to as “Steve”.

It took some racking of my brains to eventually dig out the information that the broadcasts were Paul Temple stories (they used the theme tune of Coronation Scot, which I could also remember, but not the name of the piece).

Having got that far it wasn’t too hard to find out that Steve was not some contraction or pet name used by Temple for his wife, but in fact her pen name as a journalist (Steve Trent). Her real name was apparently Louise. I never knew…

Swimming, 20th October 2017

Once again this already short session was delayed at the start, so again I just got into the water and got on with things, but for what felt like the first time this week it actually went really well from the outset and I managed to cover 2,000m front crawl and still had a few minutes in hand. Same story on the technique front; thinking about head position, body rotation and stroke length.

Sadly it looks like I won’t make 50km this month, but I’ve had a couple of below average days and missed one completely so I guess that’s no surprise. On the positive side I hope I’ll make at least 45km, leaving me in a fairly good position to reach my target of half a million metres for the year some time late in November.

Total distance for the month: 31,000m
Total distance for this year: 446,200m

Swimming, 19th October 2017

Really wasn’t in the mood for swimming today, but by the time I’d done 1km I was feeling a bit better and by the end I was tempted to do a bit more than the 2,300m I had done, but opted to save a little energy for tomorrow. Odd how often it is that when I get into the pool I can feel lacking in enthusiasm but by the time I’ve finished it feels pretty good. In that respect I guess it’s a lot like hitting your had against a wall 😀

Slightly late getting into the pool today as the lifeguards were busy patching up a child who’d had an accident in the previous school session. Fortunately nothing too serious by the looks of it.

Today’s session was much the same as yesterday as I was still feeling tired and things needed doing at work. I just did two fewer 50s at the end. I concentrated on stroke length, body rotation and head position again, particularly trying to look slightly backwards when breathing to my right to avoid lifting my head (thereby sinking my legs).

Total distance for the month: 26,700m
Total distance for this year: 441,900m
Distance compared to annual target: 39,900m ahead

A large degree of money-grubbing

I received a “begging letter” today, from the university where I studied for my degree. They’re after donations from ex-students to fund poorer students so they can attend the university and study.

Whilst I’d certainly agree that one’s financial circumstances shouldn’t restrict opportunities for education, I do also find it slightly galling that universities take so much money from students leaving them with massive debts and then pay some of their staff many times my income. Perhaps if they’re that concerned about the opportunities for poorer students they should look to their own finances first.

Still a little tired after the previous evening’s tri session, so I kept things simple doing 20 x 100m and then 10 x 50m front crawl working on stroke length, body rotation and head position. Improvement seems to be coming, slowly. I feel as though I’m getting more distance over the water with my arms before entry, but I’m still fighting the tendency to lift my head slightly when breathing to the right.

Swimming, 16th October 2017

Another tri fitness session today, all front crawl. Quite an odd one as only four people turned up so we had a lane each and still some left over. The set was:

4 x 3 lengths as swim, catch-up, choice drill, 30 seconds rest
6 x 1 length sprint, 45 seconds rest
3 x 12 lengths repeating easy, medium, fast, 30 seconds rest
4 x 2 lengths as 1 length doggy paddle, 1 length swim, 30 seconds rest
6 lengths swim down

I ignored all the drills and just worked on body rotation and stroke length. I struggle with lots of drills anyhow, as my legs sink if I’m not going fast enough. I managed everything, but was two lengths short on the swim down when we ran out of time, so my total for the night was 2,200m.

Total distance for the month: 21,800m
Total distance for this year: 437,000m
Distance compared to annual target: 39,000m ahead
