DIY Peppadew peppers
I love Peppadew peppers and for a few years now I’ve been trying to produce my own. It’s not possible to buy their seeds, but the common belief on the interwebs is that they’re actually Malawi Piquante peppers which are … Continue reading
James and the giant Butternut Squash
We didn’t get many butternut squashes this year. Probably in part because I didn’t do much watering of the vegetable plot. Which is ironic in the light of the previous posting. If I had watered the plot we might not … Continue reading
I hope this breaks down before Spring
I’ve pressed so many apples this season that I was running out of space to compost the pulp. I estimate that I’ve done seven tonnes of apples and I’m not finished yet, so I just had to start spreading it … Continue reading
New potatoes for Christmas
When I harvested my Charlotte potatoes in the Summer there were a few green ones thanks to the blackbirds digging around in the dry compost looking for good. Rather than put them into the compost, I saved them in hessian … Continue reading
Siamese peppers
Not entirely sure how this happens. Two flowers, one stem? ?
No dig diary, 12th January 2026
“Peppers propagating!”, I whispered as I tapped the empty packets with my dibber, before using it to cast “Expecto Capsicum!” over the trays of newly-sown seeds… All my pepper varieties are now sown, though thanks to other things that needed … Continue reading
First seed-sowing of the year!
I planned to get all my sweet and chile peppers down today in the hope of giving them a good start early in the year so I collected them all together: From the top left I have: Cayenne chiles, home-saved … Continue reading

Off the scale!
Ok, not quite. I wish I could think of a practical way to extract this heat though, say until the heap cooled to about 50°C.
This little chile lived all Winter
A Hungarian Black, which oddly is not a mind-altering leaf crop, in Frankenstein’s greenhouse. This survived the entire Winter last year and is still going strong even now. Produced a nice crop of chiles, too 😀 Others nearby didn’t make … Continue reading
