
No, I haven’t been throttling the life out of the squirrels that have yet again nicked all the walnuts off my walnut tree, though I feel I could be excused for such an action. In fact I have been picking blackberries again.

I hope this won’t be my last harvest. There are loads of berries that still aren’t quite ripe, but I’d not be surprised if the birds get to them before I do.
This is the first year I can recall that there haven’t been lots of flies on the fruit when I have been picking them. Whilst on the one hand that’s quite pleasant, it concerns me that it might be indicative of a lack of insect life generally, due to the weather. That in turn will affect all the animals that feed on insects. For example, in Spring we had loads of swallows flying about the place. Whilst there are still a small number it’s nowhere near as many and it’s probably too early for them to be thinking about heading off to warmer climes just yet.
