Building an observatory. Construction #27

It’s been a slow four weeks since my last post, mostly because of the virus that my daughter kindly shared with me. It has left both of us feeling quite exhausted.

However, I have managed to make a little progress on the observatory.

Firstly, I finished painting the roof frame, dodging the rain as I went. This took considerably longer than I’d hoped because the weather wouldn’t play ball.

The next step was to get the OSB fixed down to form the sloping sides of the roof. For this I intended to use some Tek screws, which are designed to be self-drilling and self-tapping in steel. I thought I’d best try one out before getting up on the roof with an 8×4 sheet of OSB, so here it is. No drilling, no tapping, just hold the screw in place and let it do the work:

Getting the boards up on the roof was a bit time-consuming and took the better part of two weekends because I was having to dodge the weather again (and daylight hours are very short right now), but overall they went on easily enough. I did have a few screws that didn’t want to go through the steel, but in the main they did a pretty good job, though I reckon if I’d used two drill/drivers, one with a drill bit and one with the screwdriver bit, I could have used screws that were just self-tapping. I did discover that my new OSB boards were actually 2400mm x 1200mm whereas the left-over ones I had from the beer shack were 2440mm x 1220mm. A little unexpected, but fortunately it didn’t spoil anything. Here’s roof with the OSB all in place:

Having got that far, the last job of “roofing fortnight” was to get the EPDM in place. Temperatures are sufficiently low (and the weather sufficiently wet) that gluing it down isn’t really possible at the moment so I decided just to get it into place and wait for a convenient time to do the gluing. Lifting 30kg of EPDM up onto the roof was quite tricky in my fragile state, but I eventually managed it by folding the sheet so it would fall down each side of the roof from the ridge and then lifting it, followed by myself, up onto the roof of the warm room after which it was only a short lift to get it onto the ridge and pulled into place, temporarily clamped down at the edges.

Light was fading fast at this point, but I even managed to get in a bit of astrophotography as I cleared up 🙂

Swimming, 6th November 2018

After yesterday’s disaster I wasn’t sure what to expect today, attempting the same set:

400m front crawl warm-up
25 x 50m front crawl, target time 50s, rest interval 25s
200m front crawl swim down

Fortunately it was all rather better with most reps in the 47s and 48s, but at rep 14 I just couldn’t get my breath back and had to sit out rep 15. I then managed to get as far as rep 21 before failing on 22 and sitting out 23, after which the last two were relatively easy even when I lost my footing on the wall on the last turn.

Swimming, 5th November 2018

Back to the normal term-time schedule today, and another attempt at:

400m front crawl warm-up
25 x 50m front crawl, target time 50s, rest interval 25s
200m front crawl swim down

Sadly, today was dire. I really couldn’t find any speed and I just didn’t seem to have the energy. Two of the first five reps were over 50s and then I had failures on reps 10, 15 and 17, at which point I stopped. I’ll have to get some decent rest and have another go tomorrow 🙁

Building an observatory. Construction #26

Oh, what dreams I had! I thought this weekend might be the weekend when I finally got the roof onto the observatory. Sadly the weather had other ideas 🙁

I went out on Saturday morning to paint the bare steel of the frame with Hammerite and managed to get about two thirds of the way through that before lunch. But whilst I was eating a fine drizzle started, leaving the frame wet. Over the next couple of hours the drizzle turned to rain and I was forced to give up for the day.

Things had not improved by Sunday, with near-continuous rain all day, so that was as far as I got. Most days this week are looking pretty wet, too, so it may well be next weekend before I can get started again.

Swimming, 1st November 2018

Very quiet in the pool today, unlike my previous visit. And a new set to attempt as well:

400m front crawl warm-up
25 x 50m front crawl, target time 50s, rest interval 25s
200m front crawl swim down

I was expecting this one to be tough, and it was. I can’t complain about how it went though. I had a few 47s to start, then generally a mix of 48s and 49s. My first failure was on rep 17, so I sat out 18 and restarted on 19. I had one more failure on rep 22, but finished the remainder of the set without another.

Overall I’m not disappointed. I’d say it was a pretty decent first attempt and I’m quite looking forward to having another go.

Swimming, 30th October 2018

Both my children wanted to go to the pool with me today and there was also an unannounced life guard training session in the pool so it was a little cramped. Another swimmer also wanted to lane-swim and between the four of us we ended up sharing two lanes. I was back for another attempt at my current set:

400m front crawl warm-up
25 x 50m front crawl, target time 51s, rest interval 24s
200m front crawl swim down

During the warm-up my arms really felt quite tired and the increasing choppiness of the water from being so close to other swimmers made things harder work so I really wasn’t convinced that I stood a chance of completing the set today. From the first rep I was clearly slower than yesterday, but I had a couple of seconds in hand over the target time so I didn’t get too concerned until I started dropping into the 50s at about halfway. By the time I’d completed the 20th rep I was still on target and desperate to swim out the set. The last two reps were very tough, but putting everything I had into the last one I made it with seconds to spare.

So, exhausted but pleased, I move on once again. The target time for the next set will drop to 50s and 25s rest interval. That genuinely is going to be tough.

Building an observatory. Construction #25

The weather has suddenly turned quite cold as the wind has moved around to the north, meaning there’s little I can do at the moment. I did however take the opportunity to finish screwing down the rails for the roof and cutting the final sections of rail to allow it to open fully. That was pretty much it though. Assuming the OSB turns up for the roof and the temperatures get a little higher I can get the steel painted and the roof finished, but I’m pretty much stuck otherwise.

Swimming, 29th October 2018

I wasn’t sure what I’d find today when I got to the pool as it’s half term week and there are holiday clubs running at the sports centre. As it was, the pool was empty. My daughter had joined me for the set, though hers was a good few seconds faster than mine, which was:

400m front crawl warm-up
25 x 50m front crawl, target time 51s, rest interval 24s
200m front crawl swim down

Last time I failed this on rep 11, so I was very pleased this time to make it all the way through the set with all but two reps under 50s.

Swimming, 26th October 2018

Easy day today, and just as well as the pool was quite busy with half term holidays starting. I just spent my time doing tumble turn practice. I do this a great deal at the moment as I still find tumble turns quite demanding.

Swimming, 25th October 2018

I wasn’t entirely keen to swim today as there was a lot of tension in my neck and back, I think as a result of sleeping badly, but just to keep the momentum going I made myself go anyhow. And it was a new set today:

400m front crawl warm-up
25 x 50m front crawl, target time 51s, rest interval 24s
200m front crawl swim down

Things started well and I was happy with how it was going, but on rep 11 I dropped outside 51s, so sat the next one out. I don’t really know why I didn’t make that one. I felt as though I was doing ok, so perhaps I just lost focus a little. After that I was back on it and completed rep 24 with no further failures, only to touch outside 51s on the final rep 🙁

Still, I was expecting this one to be tough so perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised. Hopefully I should do better next time.
