I think I’ve started something…
We have been away this weekend, close to where we used to live before we moved to the south-west. Quite horrifying to find that what was a sleepy little town when we lived nearby has become what appears to be … Continue reading
Memory Lane, 17th July 2022: I can see you!
My next little tablesaw/woodworking project: clear, insulated crownboards for beehives. More box joints for these, to make up a box about 60mm deep. Then a sheet of clear polycarbonate on the bottom, held in place around the sides by a … Continue reading
Memory Lane, 6th July 2022: Ouch!
Ahem. Beekeepers may find it easy to guess how this happened 😀 I have a couple of colonies that are, shall we say… a little feisty. I shall be doing something about them as soon as possible. I normally wear … Continue reading
Memory Lane, 3rd July 2022: Floors in manufacture
Next job for the new table saw… My bees tend to fill mesh floors with propolis, suggesting to me that they’re not very keen on them, so I’ve decided to move back to solid or sealed floors, and to kick … Continue reading
Bee inspections
Never mind the fact that “it’s still winter”, we’ve had very few days below 10°C recently and earlier this week when the Sun was out I was watching the bees in my home apiary flying strongly. I got to thinking … Continue reading
Memory Lane, 22 June 2022: Putting the box joints to use
Now my new table saw blade has arrived I can get on with testing it out for making box joints. First, a test run using the jig I posted about a few days ago. Confident that it would do the … Continue reading
Memory Lane, 19th June 2022: My first ever box joint
I must post about my table saw at some point… Anyhow, I want to start making more of my own beekeeping kit — ideally as much as possible, and whilst box joints aren’t required they’re a neat way to join … Continue reading
Bee socks!
I shall certainly wear these whilst beekeeping as it’s generally only when I’m wearing boots that I wear socks at all, clogs or Croc-alikes (as slippers) being my usual choice of footwear.
Memory Lane, 12th June 2022: Another couple of bait hives
I set these two up in my home apiary, a little distance from the existing hives. One is a standard poly brood box. The other is a pair of poly supers with standard national brood frames inside. They have both … Continue reading
Memory Lane, 12th June 2022: First Swarm
The first swarm to arrive in one of my home bait hives this year. Not from my colonies, I hasten to add 🙂 I feel quite chuffed to have seen them actually turn up at the hive and then dissappear … Continue reading
